Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Superwoman Syndrome!

March 7, 2012

As a single working parent, who is trying to juggle raising a free-spirited teenager and my career in TV, I totally get being overwhelmed (even crazy) trying to do it all and do it perfectly. I think a lot of women in these fast-paced times can relate – even celebrities who seem to have an army of helpers at their beck and call. Just look at Demi Moore, Britney Spears, or Angelina Jolie – they’ve all publicly talked about or blamed stress for their hardships.

Life coach Gary Kobat, who has worked with celebs like Kate Winslet and Mariska Hargitay, believes women are more susceptible to stress or “adrenal fatigue”, which is that feeling of fatigue, fuzziness, mood swings and cravings for self-destructive substances. “This term is used to describe a set of symptoms related to the way the body is managing stress. Stress is any type of physical, mental or emotional pressure,” states Gary. And stress, as we all know, can sabotage our sense of well-being. “People living in a state of high stress will take more time to discover, process, and integrate information, which will compromise reaction time, communication and overall performance,” adds Gary.

Gary says warning signs of too much stress can be weight gain, eating issues, acne, inflammation, and the overuse and abuse of drugs, meds, and alcohol. “All we have is right now, life happens right now. Happiness can only happen right now. When your ‘now’ is full of toxic yesterdays or tomorrows, it’s like a closet that’s full, no room, and we deny our opportunity to have a now moment or be peaceful and happy.”

Self-care is Gary’s number one remedy to fight back stress and regain a little serenity. Sounds simple, but if you’re like me, I barely have time to make my kids’ dinner or enough money to pay the bills. I am constantly in a state of panic. So, I am not sure when I can squeeze in or afford a soul-soothing massage. But try if you can, to breathe and take a moment. Most fear and anxiety does stem from a feeling of unworthiness.

Gary shares with Healthy Hollywood his simple formula to De-Stress.

D = define who and what’s most important in your life.

E = energize with good fuels, exercise easy.

S = support and supplementation.

T = take time for yourself.

R = release the past, reframe the future.

E = eliminate energy drains, establish boundaries.

S = sleep, silence, soulful peacefulness.

S = smile and laugh.
