Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin' Monday — Heidi Klum's Stay Cool Running Tips!

August 1, 2011

The heat is on!

This summer is hot, hot, hot, but the blazing temperature hasn't cooled Heidi Klum's desire to run outdoors.

The supermodel mom started a running challenge in June (which she blogged about on her AOL lifestyle website), to run every day for six weeks. "People always ask me how do you do this –how do you always stay in shape? I'm like, OK, let me show you how I do it. I'm going to go every day and you can come and run with me," Heidi reveals to Healthy Hollywood.

Healthy Hollywood caught up with Heidi right before one of her early AM jaunts in New York's Central Park. The temperature was a sweltering 102 degrees. "It's like someone left the oven door open, it's boiling, it's like sticky, humid," commented Heidi.

Running in the heat is no joke – it can lead to dehydration and heat stroke. "You have to be careful," advises Heidi, who also adds, "It's good to push yourself, yes, but don't overdo it and especially in this heat you have to be careful. Drink a lot of water and listen to your body, when it's too hot you have to go inside."

Don't try and beat the heat – if you are running outdoors and feel light-headed, nauseous, or have headache and cramps – these are signs to slow down the pace.

Heidi Klum's longtime trainer, David Kirsch, shares these beat-the-heat tips:
1. Try to run first thing in the morning or later in the day, when the sun is not at its strongest.
2. Make sure to wear a hat to protect your head from the sun's rays.
3. Stay hydrated throughout the run and after the run as well.
4. Wear a good sweat proof sport sunblock, with at least 45 SPF to protect your skin from getting sunburned.
5. Wear light colored, sweat wicking sporting clothes, as this will not attract the sun.
